The 431 Exchange’s Scholarship Program Makes the News with a Mother–Daughter Duo!

News flash! Our scholarship program recently made the news on New Orleans television!

On WVUE’s Fox 8 Morning Edition Show, the groundbreaking civil rights work of New Orleans’ Adult Education Center during the 1960s was highlighted, as well as The 431 Exchange’s Scholarship Program dedicated to the school’s legacy. The piece featured 1972 Adult Education Center graduate Linda Phoenix Teamer, chair of the 431 Exchange’s Scholarship Committee. Right alongside Teamer was her daughter, Serina Phoenix, Director of Special Programs for The 431 Exchange.

The Fox interview focused on our scholarship program, which is currently in full swing for 2020–21. Serina spoke of the impact the scholarships have had on previous recipients: “It’s amazing,” she said. “The 431 Exchange has been able to provide life-changing services for people…help with books, with tuition, with fees.”

Serina said that one aspect that makes our scholarship program unique is that it also serves non-traditional students of any age pursuing higher education.

Linda added that another facet that sets our program apart is that funds go directly to students. Many scholarships are given through universities, and because of that, there is often a delay for students in receiving funds, sometimes when they need them most.

This mother–daughter duo highlighted our mission to further educational equality in the United States, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
